Ixil villager at La Bendición about 5’2” tall weighing less than 100 lbs shown carrying on his back eight concrete blocks weighing 10 kilograms (22 lbs) each. The blocks were strapped tightly with rope, and a connecting strap was wrapped around the man’s forehead to help bear the total weight of 80 kilograms (176 lbs). The men in our UPC service team in 1998 had trouble carrying two of these blocks, one in each hand, down one hill and up another to where the houses were being built. This man jogged down the hill and up the other side in half the time it took one of us Americans.
